Kathmandu: Kathmandu Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage property is inscribed as seven Monument Zones. The religious ensemble of Swayambhu includes the oldest Buddhist monument (a stupa) in the Valley; that of Boudhanath includes the largest stupa in Nepal; Pashupati has an extensive Hindu temple precinct, and Changu Narayan comprises traditional Newari settlement, and a Hindu temple complex with one of the earliest inscriptions in the Valley from the fifth century AD. The unique tiered temples are mostly made of fired brick with mud mortar and timber structures. The roofs are covered with small overlapping terracotta tiles, with gilded brass ornamentation. One day King became aware of queen’s secret when he saw her in the form of Goddess. Immediately after the King passed away mysteriously and the Queen, as was the custom of the day, committed sati (ritual immolation) upon her husband’s funeral pyre. While the southern part of the complex houses the open Basantapur Square area, the main Durbar Square area occupies the western portion. For many years, the former used to be stable, which housed royal elephants. Today, it is a site that houses souvenir stalls. In the northeast part of the complex runs the second part of the square. In this area, the entrance to the glorious Hanuman Dhoka Complex is planted, with a beautiful assortment of temples nestled behind it. The place is an active walkway that connects many streets together for the general public.

In 1979, Boudhanath Stupa was honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Boudhanath Stupa has acquired several names throughout the years, including the Buddha Stupa, Chorten Chempo, Chaitya, Jarung Khashor, and the Khasti. The entire complex of the stupa houses 50 Tibetan convents, known as gompas, which have been acting as shelters for Tibetan refugees since 1959.
