Welcome to Guwahati Airport , the first day of our amazing trip to Kaziranga National Park! We are so excited to share this adventure with you and show you the incredible wildlife of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. On arrival check in to our comfortable accommodation and get ready for the next day's safari. Kaziranga is home to the largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses in the world, as well as many other animals such as tigers, elephants, and birds. We can't wait to explore this natural wonderland with you!
Kaziranga National Park:
Home to the largest population of the one-horned rhino on earth, Kaziranga National Park is one of India’s national treasures in terms of flora and fauna. Located in the state of Assam in North-Eastern India, its total area is shared by the districts of Nagaon, Golaghat and Karbi Anglong placing it roughly at the centre of the state. Approximately around five hours by road from Guwahati, Kaziranga National Park stands tall as the epitome of successful wildlife conservation in India. In 1985, it was awarded the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Lying on the floodplains of the mighty river Brahmaputra, rich vegetation covers almost the entirety of Kaziranga National Park. Receiving massive amounts of rainfall each year, at times even crossing dangerous levels, this national park is characterised by tall elephant grass, marshlands and tall tropical broadleaf forests. Here, a wide variety of fauna thrives including the one-horned rhino, Asiatic elephants, wild water buffalo, leopards and Royal Bengal Tigers. Kaziranga National Park is also listed officially as a Tiger reserve and is home to one of the world’s largest population of tigers.
Post breakfast you will go on an exciting jeep safari in the central range of the park and Post lunch in the western ranges of Kaziranga National Park. This thrilling experience will allow you to get closer to the wildlife and explore the park's natural beauty.
After an eventful day, you will return to your accommodation in Kaziranga for another night's stay.
On this day, you will set off on a drive to Majuli River Island, situated in the majestic Brahmaputra River. To reach the island, you will cross the river on a ferry, which adds an adventurous touch to your journey. Majuli is known for being the largest river island globally and for its rich cultural heritage and traditions. Overnight stay at Majuli.
Majuli:
Majuli, a verdant and eco-friendly freshwater island nestled in the Brahmaputra River, is a pristine haven just 20 kilometers from Jorhat city in Assam. Encompassing a total area of 1250 square kilometers, Majuli holds the distinction of being the world's largest river island, drawing tourists from far and wide. Its surreal beauty and unique cultural heritage have positioned it as a strong contender for UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Inhabited mostly by Tribals, Majuli boasts a captivating and diverse culture, earning it the title of the cultural capital of Assam.
Majuli serves as the hub of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture, is home to several Satras, where visitors can witness traditional dance performances, learn about the unique Vaishnavite philosophy, and marvel at exquisite handcrafted artifacts.
You can begin by visiting some of the nearby satras, which are Hindu monasteries known for their significance in the religious and cultural life of the region. Additionally, you can explore the mask-making place, witnessing the skilled artisans at work. A visit to the pottery village provides an opportunity to try your hand at pottery-making.
In the afternoon, you can explore the Mishing tribal villages, gaining insights into their traditional way of life. You will spend the night in Majuli.
After crossing the Brahmaputra River once again by ferry, you will drive to Jorhat, renowned as the tea hub of Assam. Upon reaching Jorhat, you will check into a tea planter's bungalow, where you can relax and rejuvenate. You will spend the night in Jorhat.
Jorhat:
Famous for its culture, mosques, tombs, gardens and most importantly - its tea plantations, Jorhat is a culturally and commercially important city in the state of Assam. The headquarters of Jorhat district, this city is also known as the tea capital of India. It is located at a distance of about 305 Km from Guwahati and around 138 Km from Dibrugarh.
The beautiful, commercial, cultural and artistic city of Jorhat is the second largest in Assam. Tea plantations are the main agricultural areas around the city which also takes the shape of a tourist attraction given its simple natural charm. There are as many as 135 tea gardens in Jorhat. Apart from the tea plantations, Jorhat is home to other heritage sites and other natural reserves - Thengal Bhawan, Raja Maidam, Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary and Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar are some of the major places of interest here.
On the sixth day, you will drive from Jorhat to Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland. The journey takes approximately eight hours, during which you will make a few stops. Your first stop will be at Garampani, known for its hot water springs, providing a soothing experience. The next stop will be at Deothan, a small village famous for its ancient temple. Reach kohima by evening, you will spend the night in Kohima
Kohima:
Kohima is the hilly capital of Nagaland, which is one of the seven sister states of India. ‘Kohima’ is the anglicized name given by the British, the original name being 'Kewhira' derived from the Kewhi flowers found in the region. Famous for its ethereal environment and untouched beauty, it is a land of folklore passed down through the ages. Situated at a height of 1500 metres above the sea level, it is endowed with quaint hills, emerald forests and a picturesque landscape. It is the go-to place for all you adventure enthusiasts as it is ideal for trekking, camping and hiking.
Kohima was built by the British and is home to the Naga and Kulkis tribe who can amaze one with their independence and a mystical and colourful culture that surrounds them. Kohima finds its place in history as the site of an intense fight with the Japanese, a part of a 64 day long battle during the World War II. One of the most popular sits here include the Commonwealth War Cemetery which homes thousands of soldiers of the World War II. Other than that, the city has a lot more to offer to its visitors - a museum, zoo, sanctuary, valleys, self-governing villages and much more.
The seventh day is dedicated to the Hornbill Festival, a vibrant celebration of the Naga culture and traditions. The festival showcases traditional dance and music performances, handicrafts and food stalls, and even unique competitions like the Naga chilli-eating contest. You can also visit the morungs, which are traditional Naga houses where the tribes reside. The entire day will be filled with immersion in the festival's lively atmosphere, providing an opportunity to learn about the distinct Naga culture. You will spend the night in Kohima
Hornbill Festival:
Nagaland is known as the 'Land of Festivals' and one such grand carnival, organized by the State Tourism of Arts and Culture Department, Government of Nagaland is 'Hornbill festival'. Also known as ''Festival of Festivals", this is a commonly celebrated being a traditional cluster of all the seventeen Naga tribes, to promote intercultural harmony. It hardly has any featureless moments and provides a lifetime opportunity to know about ancient tribal lives through the exploration of the structure of tribal huts, which is dated back to primaeval lifestyles including other instruments like drums, gongs, costumes and wooden carvings
On this day, you will visit Khonoma village, known for its historical significance and rich cultural heritage. Exploring the village, you will learn about its history, traditions, and experience the warm hospitality of the locals. In the afternoon, you can return to the Hornbill Festival to enjoy the remaining events and performances. You will spend the night in Kohima.
Khonoma village:
A town belonging to the 'Angami Naga' ethnic group of Nagaland, Khonoma Village is a one-of-its-kind project in the country. Located about 20 km from the state capital of Kohima, Khonoma village is a Green Village, where all forms of hunting have been abolished for a more sustainable ecosystem. It is testament to the will power of the tribal groups of Nagaland to protect and conserve their natural habitat. The resident Naga tribes here are traditionally dependent on nature for their food and have strong hunting practices. However, they have given up on their centuries old heritage for a more sustainable way of life with nature.
An ambitious project of converting a whole tribal village into an eco-friendly, conservation based village certainly also yields fantastic views. Nesteled at the base of the mountains of Nagaland you would pass through misty valleys, gently sloping hillocks, terraced farms, and an air of a strong bond with nature.
After breakfast, you will check out from your hotel and proceed to Dimapur airport for your flight back home, marking the end of your memorable journey through the fascinating landscapes and cultures of Assam and Nagaland.
