The entrance of the fort, atop a hill, is majestic and has seven gates. These are called Victory Gate, Fateh Gate, Gopal Gate, Bhairon Gate, Dedh Kamgra Gate, Marti Gate and finally Loha Gate. Each of these was built at different times and serves a very specific purpose. Later, enjoy your leisure time at the serene surroundings of Gadisar Lake, and return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Jaisalmer Fort:
Jaisalmer Fort is popular for its enchanting beauty, exotic location and hidden passageways. It may look like it is made of sand in the Thar Desert but it is made of yellow sandstone.
It was included in World Heritage in 2013 and since then, it is always filled with people. Tourists come here from all over the world, to enjoy the starry night and the uninterrupted golden fort inundated with the morning sun. These features make it more appealing than others like Chittorgarh Fort, Nahargarh Fort.
Jaisalmer ka Kila was built by RajaRawal Jaisal in 1156 AD. He was a Bhatti Rajput ruler. He chose the Trikuta hills of the great Thar Desert to symbolise the dominance, power and royalty of Rajputs. The Jaisalmer Fort has not only celebrated its impressiveness several times in history but also witnessed several battles with Khiljis, Tughalaqs, Mughals and Rathore Kings. In 1276 AD, Rawal Jethsi built a defence system known as Rang Burj. He decided to use this Rang Burj after Alauddin Khilji, tried twice to invade the Jaisalmer Fort.
Gadisar Lake:
On the outskirts of Jaisalmer in the arid state of Rajasthan lies the beautiful Gadisar Lake, which sits like an oasis in the heart of a desert. Back in the middle ages, there were no canals or irrigation system or other scientific methods to bring water to the arid regions of Rajasthan. This reservoir was built by Raja Rawal Jaisal keeping in mind the need of his people. Located close to the fort of Jaisalmer, the lake is an easy respite from the hot and dry desert climate. Gadisar Lake offers scenic and picturesque views of the lake and the adjacent fort, especially when the eastern sky is blood red and the sun rises, striking its rays on the top floors of Jaisalmer Fort.
Whether you like to spend some quiet time by yourself or have fun with your family, Gadisar Lake has a handful of experiences to offer. You can go boating in the lake or simply enjoy a walk around the embankment. If winter is your time of visit, you might just be lucky enough to see beautiful exotic migratory birds flocking in and around the lake from the nearby bird sanctuary of Bharatpur.
Day 3 :
Jaisalmer: Sightseeing
Jaisalmer
Get ready to explore the Thar desert near Jaisalmer post a sumptuous breakfast. Begin your excursion with a visit to Bada Bagh followed by Lodurva, abandoned village of Kuldhara and Khaba Fort. Reach to Sam Sand Dunes, and enjoy the exquisite sunset and Camel Safari. Wind up the day while enjoying some folk music and dance in luxurious swiss tents.
Bada Bagh:
One of the relics of Rajasthan's illustrious past, Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer is primarily a series of cenotaphs set amidst a garden. The glorious golden cenotaphs gleam in the deserts of Jaisalmer and the adjoining garden. It is located about 6 kms north of Jaisalmer, on the way to Ramgarh. Bada Bagh, translated literally as 'Big Garden', is a garden complex nestled between Jaisalmer and Lodhruva in Rajasthan. This is a popular site because it is a garden that has the cenotaphs of all the Maharajas and other prestigious family members of Jaisalmer; all royal Rajputs kings of 6 centuries!
Bada Bagh is actually located on a small hillock and the entrance to the cenotaphs is set at the bottom of the hill. The setting of Bada Bagh is dramatically stunning. The chhatris are the same colour as the landscape around them, a dull brown of the sand, and hence, appear like a mirage in the desert. The towering windmills in the distance only add up to the beauty this site has to offer. The bases of the various chhatris at Bada Bagh are square or hexagonal. The domes, however, can be found in a variety of shapes, ranging from a simple circular, to squarish to a slight pyramid shape. These are free from any kind of artwork, and only depict some information about the Raja they depict in particular.
Khaba Fort:
Khaba Fort in Jaisalmer is ruined citadel situated amidst the scorching heat of the Thar Desert. The history of this barren, eerie, and mystic village, dates back to the 13th century. The architecture once belonged to the Paliwal Brahmins of the Kuldhara village who fled the town in the 19th century leaving behind a ghost town. The stairs at the fort entrance lead to the focal point of the entire village and the surrounding countryside. You can also walk through the ramparts and the quiet streets of the fort to the mystical Kuldhara village that stretches from the base of the fort for a spooky experience.
The turreted towers, intricate latticeworks, and the beautiful windows add elegance to the structure. Its charm is enhanced by a muster of peacocks. It also houses a small museum with ancient artifacts and various kinds of rock fossils. The Shiva temple, mud huts are the other remnants of the place. The staircases that lead to the underground is home to 80 deserted sandstone abodes. Here is something uncanny- before anyone leaves the fort, its former residents cast a spell to prevent anyone from settling in the village ever again. Till date, the fort is nothing but ruins of what was left behind 200 years ago.
Sam Sand Dunes:
Sam Sand Dunes in Jaisalmer is an offbeat natural tourist destination in Rajasthan right in the middle of the Thar Desert. Right in the middle of the historical forts and colourful markets, Sam Sand Dunes are among the best and most authentic in the country, some rising as tall as 30-60 metres tall. Lying around 40-42 kilometres from the golden city of Jaisalmer, the dunes are located over calm and undulating stretches of golden yellow sand stretching for around 2 kilometres along the borders of the Jaisalmer Desert National Park. Travellers often come here to witness the dramatic and sunrise and sunsets. You can also gain a close insight into the culture and tradition of Rajasthan with dances and musicals that are staged around the campfires at night.
If you have some time, do camp in the desert with the locals! There is a tradition of crackling up a bonfire with your fellow tourists and enjoying the festivities the evening brings in the campsites. In short, a visit to the Sam Sand Dunes is a once in a lifetime experience, with its uncovered and unadorned natural beauty and the true culture of the state in its unabridged authenticity.

Wake up to witness the majestic beauty of this vibrant state post savouring a hearty breakfast. Visit to famous havelis, like: Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Singh Haveli, Thar Heritage Museum, and other magical sites that leave you with some sweet memories before you depart for your home.
Patwon ki Haveli:
Also known as the Mansion of Brocade Merchants, Patwon Ki Haveli is a famous tourist attraction in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. At first glance from the narrow street it faces, one would see several windows and balconies with intricate carvings, and once inside, they would get to witness the grandeur of the Haveli. It is a cluster of five small havelis built by a rich trader in the 19th Century. Locals also refer the haveli as Kothari’s Patwa Haveli. The five havelis were built for the family and together, the entire complex forms the largest mansion in the city.
The intricacy of this architecture lies in its exquisite wall paintings, balconies that open to a panoramic view, gateways, arches and most importantly the mirror works on the wall. In one of the sections of the Haveli, the Mural work is designed uniquely, and each portion separates from one another depicting a specific style. With over 60 balconies, the pillars and ceilings of this golden architecture are carved in intricate designs and miniature works.
Salim Singh Haveli:
Salim Singh ki Haveli is a beautiful edifice at the heart of the city Jaisalmer. It is one of the major tourist attractions built over the remains of an older haveli in the late 19th century and commissioned by Salim Singh, the then prime minister of the Kingdom. It also holds another beautiful name - Jahaz Mahal as the front facet of the Haveli resembles a ship stern. Created with strong iron rods unlike the ones made of cement and mortar; the mansion is famous for its architectural elegance.
The Haveli is almost 300 years old adorning a beautiful arched roof in the shape of a peacock. Famous for its distinctive architecture, the mansion has 38 gracefully carved balconies surmounted with pale-blue cupolas, and all have distinct designs for themselves. The gateway is guarded by two stone carved elephants with the interior walls covered in imperial paintings. Salim Singh ki Haveli is constructed on the remains of the old Haveli which was built in the late 17th century. The Haveli also houses a beautiful Moti Mahal where dances were held to entertain the aristocrats and royal courtiers. This piece of sheer elegance was later occupied by the most influential Mehta family of Jaisalmer.
Thar Heritage Museum:
Founded by L Narayan Khatri, the Thar Heritage Museum is a historical reservoir. L Narayan was an eminent scholar of the Jaisalmer folklore. The museum not just tells you the times of Jaisalmer but also showcases the rich culture, heritage, folk art and architectural style of Rajasthan. It has a fascinating assortment of Jaisalmer artifacts, fossils, instruments, displays of types of kitchen equipment, turbans, birth & death customs and a lot more.
Apart from this, the museum houses a unique sea fossil collection, documents, postcards, coins, ornaments of the desert horses, ships, manuscripts, and weapons. Collections of sea fossils will tell us how the land once a sea eventually became the Thar Desert. The museum also engages its visitors with the snakes and ladder game and an amiable puppet show narrated by Shri L.N Khatri, who is also the curator of the museum, presents the spirit of the Rajasthani culture. It is a unique amalgamation of the history and heritage of Thar. The nearby attractions where one can pay a visit after the Thar Heritage Museum are Jaisalmer folklore museum, Jaisalmer fortress, and the Silkroute art gallery.
